This week has been mostly surreal. I was given the opportunity to finish up some work on my Masters Project at the Relations department, so I’ve gotten one last stab at being in the office. Today I met with Dr. Sadiq Shah, the director of the Office of Technology Transfer here. Turns out that as it stands, the University has rights to my Masters Project, however, if they choose to license it elsewhere (which they do, I’ve heard), since I am co-creator of this system I get a share of whatever royalties they accrue.
Also, I retain ownership of this system. Dr. Shah recommended that I repurpose my system towards small businesses and non-profit organizations and lease some University server space (which they will do at a discount since I am an alum) and make a business for myself selling accounts to use my content management system. This concept both excites me and terrifies me. Exciting: I get to see my software work, I get to have my own business. Terrifying: I have to run my own business, come up with a reasonable quote for service, and maintain this badboy. I am currently undecided on how to proceed. I will allow the University rights to license this thing, so long as I don’t have to maintain it. Money for past work == good thing.
Today is my last day at college. I am going to miss my jobs, some of my peers, my bowling team, my tiny dorm room that gets to be 150 degrees when they turn on the heat, and my good friends that I live with on my floor. I am not going to miss class, Unix meetings, the cafeteria, and the ridiculous rules of the residence halls (no toaster? Screw you!) I can’t wait to get back to Pekin to be with Tasha, train with my Karate friends, and see if I can’t find a place to give me some money in exchange for some m4d c0ding.
Goodbye Western, hello Good Life.
