I found out from Cat today that they need to postpone my start date until at earliest April 12, because they are attempting to reorganize a few things and because a few key people were on vacation/at conferences. It was strange, the woman called and asked if it would be OK if they postponed my start date, which I perceive as being different from “we’re changing it.” I told her to do what was in their best interest, but keep in mind that I have some expenses coming soon so I would like to start as soon as possible. The woman claimed that she was on a conference until last Monday and they still need a few weeks to get paperwork in-line and work with the supervisor of my new department (more on that later) to get training stuff in place.
If they withhold the first paycheck, like I have been told by previous Cat employees, that would make my first pay date June 1. That is quite a chunk of time to go on with not much in reserve anymore. They are finding out when my first pay-date would be if they pursue this start-date change, she seemed to think there was a chance they could work out getting me paid on May 1 if I work any part of April. This would be a Good Thing.
My parents have expressed some desire to assist me in paying for life between now and then, but I don’t like the fact that they need to. If someone at Cat had been able to process things quickly, I would be employed and paid by now. Alas, Big Business moves slowly most of the time.
On the plus side of the conversation today, I found out that my responsibilities would be in the realm of web development. This is OUTSTANDING. The HR woman said she was passing my cell number off to the supervisor in charge of where I am. I was then told she wouldn’t be back in the office until Wednesday (IS ANYONE IN THE OFFICE OVER THERE??!?!!?). I have a feeling that perhaps this is the reason that the proceedings are taking so long.
I can’t wait to find out more about this position, I hope she calls soon. Until then, it’ll be me in my room rubbing two pennies together.
