Because it appears that Six Apart bought LiveJournal. They claim that not much will change for the end-user aside from getting more styles quicker. If this remains true, I say good for them.
If I start seeing ads, pop-ups, and spam The Rabid Chihuahua is going to make an appearance.
SUPPLEMENTAL: It appears that some non-paid customers are seeing banner ads on their friends page. I have no way of confirming this since I’ve been a paid customer for awhile now. If memory serves this was my impetus for becoming a paid member, so I don’t think this is a change.
I gotta give a big heads up to Slashdot for breaking this story yesterday to get us a little prepared. w00t to you all over there!

I don’t remember ads, but I do remember doing it so that I could modify styles, have more user pictures, and load the page through a PHP script.
Although a fat lot of good most of that did me.
I am troubled by this “ads” concept though.
One of the things I’d like to see is their themes go to regular, standard CSS styles. This weird convoluted BS they’re pushing for their themes currently make me cry when I think about jazzing up my journal.
They’ve already expressed a commitment to not fudging the bucket for their customers, so I hope they hold firm to that assertion.
I’ve heard that sort of committment before.
Then again, I don’t hear too many complaints about Moveable Type. We’ll see. It ain’t like we can’t roll our own if it goes south.
