Tonight was a pretty normal first class… we did some partner drills that adaquately whet the appetites of the upper ranks to spar. The second class we did so. Heedlessly in some cases.
I sparred with McCabe-san first… we have the ESP thing going on so bad right now its not even funny. We fight attacks in our minds more than we actually end up fighting them in real life. After a bit of that mental/physical frustration, we decided to switch partners. I got across from Oedewaldt-san, which is usually always a joy for me. We were sparring along, and many times during the first class
Before I continue this story, allow me to recount an old favorite…
Anyway, back to present time. I tried to sweep Oedewaldt, catching him squarly with the aforementioned big toe. I heard a pop, and felt that fun heat of pain that you only get once in awhile. Upon landing, something felt out of joint, but I thought it best to continue and see what happened. I sparred for a minute or two more, but then I had to stop. I walked over to the corner, shrugging off questions about what was wrong.
Yes, my toe was hurt. It was starting to swell and still felt out of joint, so it was time to rectify that situation. I pressed on the joint, yep, a bump was there. So I pulled at it a few directions until it finally quietly popped back into place. It never really hurt severely, but it is starting to turn interesting colors already.
I will post additional pictures if it gets any cooler, but the swelling is pretty bitchin’ at this point.
The title of this blog post came because of the fact that sometimes (most times) when I’m free sparring and something bad happens, I tend to forget I’m around other people and accidentally let expletives fly. Once, I got Erbe-san with a rather nice hook kick, but he caught it at my hip and we did this weird figure skatery twirl around because none of us could do anything. It was funny, but scary, and I let fly with an “oh shit” a couple of times. If you’re being held by the groin by Dave Erbe, you’d be scared too.
The class ended shortly thereafter, and much fun was had by all. We should take it easier on each other this close to the test, but damn it was fun to let go of a little steam tonight!
