Today was a roller coaster of events, both in and out of the office.
The day started by easily reasoning our way through the problems that plagued us the night before. Of course, in the process we found new problems. One requires some simple account work to resolve and should be done tomorrow. The other was a little more serious.
We thought for a moment that things were not going to work out. Basically, some ports that we needed open were not. Normally, this would spell disaster for a system change like this, but luckily my team lead and I were able to craft a roll out plan that still allowed us to move the bulk of our system to the new environment this weekend and also mitigate some of the risk of doing a large system rollout in one stroke.
This buys us enough time to get the ports open and the other systems migrated over and tested, all while smelling like roses to our customers.
I must say, today I really felt competant. We found a big problem and figured out a solution that not only allows us to meet our deadlines but also be responsible about making a large amount of changes at once. If this all goes according to plan, I will be very pleased.
An update on my aunt: they had a biopsy scheduled today for her brain tumor and found it to be cancerous, but the doctors decided while they were in there just to pop the thing out. They replaced it with a “chemotherapy wafer” (ouch) and my aunt made it through the proceedings quite well. So well, in fact, she was eating dinner and conversing within ten minutes of coming back to her room after the surgery. They may still have to do chemotherapy and radiation, however she’s still got all her faculties and she’s handling everything like a champ. Pretty miraculous stuff!
