The entire first class tonight was dedicated to sparring drills. Before my recent work induced hiatus, I had been getting quite a bit of mileage from the distance and timing drills that we had been doing. I was pleased to find out that I’m not the only one.

The second class was a bit more of the same, we also did a nice refresher of Bassai Dai. Throughout all of my preparation for Nidan, the most terrifying moments for me was doing this kata on the stage in Mapleton the week before the test. A few of those feelings of uncertainty and worry have become interleaved into this kata for me, its going to take some exploring to figure out how to undo that association. Storming a fortress isn’t going to happen when you’re afraid to open the gate.
It was a good class, I was a little stiff today at work. Hopefully things will get worked out in time to go see Sensei Hassell this weekend in Bloomington. I’m going to ride up with Dad, so it’ll be a fun trip. I always like getting to hang out with him, especially if karate is involved.
