Behold, my new workbench (minus top). What you see here was crafted by my grandfather, who has been woodcrafting for a LONG time. This workbench began life as a loft bed for a guy that I used to tutor in Java programming. He didn’t want it anymore and offered it in trade for my services. I was moving to the upperclassmen dorms the following year and thought that it might be nice to have, so I agreed.
The lumber never made it back to college, as I got a futon for the fall semester. Instead, this wood sat in a pile in my parents garage. Since Dad got his new car, he wanted the room back. The options were either a.) store the wood in my garage b.) throw it away, or c.) ask my grandpa to make me a workbench. Dad donated some 100 year old pine that he got from an old farmhouse for the drawer fronts, but that loft was magically transformed into this very VERY cool bench.
Since most of the lumber was supplied, my grandpa said that instead of paying him for the few materials that he had into this he would instead give it to me for Christmas. Dad and I went to Manito to pick it up last night. All I have to do now is select a top and start out on some projects of my own.
Thanks Grandpa!
I will take some more shots, however my camera decided it was out of battery power. I was lucky to snap this shot before it realized it was done.
