I’ve decided today that sanding reflects my real-life job: working very hard to make very little progress and to end up filthy and frustrated at the end of the day.
Dad and I made more progress on the table. We re-measured the stretcher board and we decided to depart from the design slightly in order to fit the aesthetic of my basement a little more. Our sights then turned to doing the rough sand of the tabletop in order to work out the horribly uneven lay of the glued and biscuited tabletop.
It appears that either through planing or clamping the boards ended up seating poorly, so we had a LOT of work to do (over three hours to be exact!) But by the end, we had a tabletop that was smooth yet still retains the rustic look that I want.
I need to invest in a belt sander. My new hand held sander just wasn’t fitting the bill for that amount of effort.
The big jobs that remain are cutting the stretcher board to our new layout and then notching and assembling the legs and base of the table. That leaves fitting the tabletop with cleats and the finishing work (sanding and staining).

I was watching norm today while recooping from a cold and he was planing and jointing wood.. his first comments was he always trys to plane the wood and glue it up asap after planing or jointing…he said that the wood has a tendency to warp and bow if you don’t….I wish I had seen that show two week ago. It would have saved a great deal of work……..still picking saw dust from my nose 48 hrs later…..well live and learn…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!crap
