Last night we ventured to Champaign/Urbana for dinner and a concert.
At the recommendation of
I knew I was in trouble when the list of appetizers contained “Figs” and many other things I couldn’t pronounce. I decided on the Pollo Fricasce. I was looking at their Flat Iron Steak, but it was $18 and if I wasn’t going to like something, I didn’t want to pay $18 for it.
True to form, Matt ordered some Duck Sausage, which well… looked like a pile of crap. He offered for me to try some, so I did. It tasted like sausage, only really spicy and gamey. I wouldn’t so much eat it again.
As we were waiting, we checked a paper to see more about the concert. It turns out the opening act was supposed to go on at 9 pm. So we had two hours to kill.
My dinner came, and it was actually extremely good. I elected the garlic mashed potatoes instead of black beans, but everything about it was totally worthwhile. Being adventerous paid off for once.
It was raining pretty hard as we got to the Canopy Club, which is actually a very impressive little venue. There were probably 300 people there, however the opening act did not go on until 10:30. We were very close to going for a refund because we had to wait for so long.
Regardless, the show began. The opening act was “Saturday Looks Good To Me”, which was… well… awful. Musically, they were pretty good but the lead singer sounded a great deal like Barney Fife only really off-key.
Finally, Of Montreal came on. They KICKED ASS. The guy that fronts the band was extremely energetic and reminded me of Beck only really bouncy. He jumped up and down while playing the guitar and singing for about two hours, I have no idea how someone has that much energy.
They sounded great, they had a woman in the band that worked the synthesizer like none other. They did the song “Requiem for O.M.M” that we wanted to hear off of the recent O.C. mix.
I really enjoyed their music, their stage presence, and their energy. I’m going to pick up some more of their music and I’d definitely see them again if they come back.
Of Montreal didn’t finish up until around 1, we didn’t leave Urbana until 1:15 or so. That means we rolled back into Pekin right around 3. We couldn’t believe that Teddy was able to make it the whole time without messing the house, but he did. What a great dog. 🙂
So it was a great evening out, we got to have a good dinner and see a great band. Hopefully we’ll get to do this more often!
