I covered Mapleton tonight, so I got the esteemed privilege of starting class and warming up. Instead of the basic warmups, I decided to get everyone in a circle and do some simple basic techniques, since we had half a dozen young white belt kids that showed up.
Thankfully, Sensei Brewer rescued me right around 6:35 pm, at what time he had me break the small group of six kids off and teach them a basic class. He told me to keep them moving with basic techniques. WOW. These kids were between the ages of 5-8 yrs old and had some attention difficulties. I basically ran them through simple basics: lunge punch, front kick, downward block, rising block. I also defaulted to one of my favorite ways of wrangling young kids… I made them do calisthenics at the end of several passes up and down the floor and told them that it was a game and the first one that finished “won.”
By the end of the half-hour, the kids were getting off the wall. They were getting tired and prone to doing things like sitting down or wandering around and it was all I could do to keep their attention to do more techniques. I was very pleased when it was time to line up. I haven’t had a class like that since the days of Kid Power.
The second class was small, only 6 people stayed around. Sensei Brewer started off some sparring drills, I did some kata with my Dad. He ended up with 10 Tekki Nidan and 10 Bassai Dai for the night, a very good workout.
I was able to cover 6 Sochin before class started and 4 in between classes, for a total of 10 tonight.
