HOLIDAY MEME:
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot chocolate, no frills. Egg Nog makes me gag.
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? Santa used to arrange our gifts all around the tree in their unwrapped glory. As years went on, more and more presents got wrapped until now they all come that way.
3. Colored or white lights on tree/house? I seem to remember more years of white lights than I do of colored lights, but I think the mix is likely 50/50. The house usually gets white lights, the tree usually colored lights.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Not usually, although we did at our house last year. Until we found out it was poisonous to dogs.
5. When do you put your decorations up? Whenever we have the most time after Thanksgiving. It angers the Lord if you turn on Christmas lights before Thanksgiving, by the way. Figure it out people!
6. What is your favorite holiday dish? Cappelletti, and my grandma’s roast beef. If I were ever having a last meal for some reason, that would be it too.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? One Christmas my sister and I couldn’t sleep. I think we were around 8 or 10 years old, so I quietly snuck up to her room and we sat up the whole night watching infomercials and “Just the Ten of Us” re-runs waiting for the appointed time to get up and open presents.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? What truth? He’s not French or something, is he?
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? While we were living at home (and most years since), my parents would buy us a new pair of pajamas (or sweat pants, etc) and we would get to open them on Christmas Eve. I don’t know when this tradition started, but it continues to this day and will when I end up having kids too. It is just fun. The rest of the presents wait until Christmas morning, in the early hours.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? It’s Hallmark, and it’s dorky. My wife has fairies and Harry Potter ornaments, I have superheroes, starships, and movie characters. I also have a vast array of Hallmark ornaments that I picked out (several for each year I have been on the Earth) that go up every year too. Mom loves her Hallmark.
11. Snow – love it or dread it? Love looking at it. Hate walking/driving in it.
12. Can you ice skate? A little. The falling happens to regularly for it to be fun though.
13. Favorite holiday movie? I love Jimmy Stewart, so I’m going to have to go with “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Extremely close runner up is “A Christmas Story”… I watch this movie at least once every year, I love everything about it.
14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Obvious answer, but I love the family togetherness. Our family has some strong, rich traditions around Thanksgiving and Christmas and getting to be with them is the most important thing to me during the holiday season.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Pumpkin Pie. I like it so much I learned to make it last year.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? If I had to pick one, it would be the Christmas Eve gathering at my aunt’s house. Either that, or watching at least one showing of TNT’s 24 hours of “A Christmas Story” on Christmas Eve.
17. What tops your tree? We’ve almost always had an angel of some kind. My mom loves angels and so does my wife.
18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Nothing really tops figuring out the perfect gift for someone each year. Especially my wife, she’s always fun to buy for.
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? It is not really a Christmas song, but there was a song on Dr. Demento in the 1980’s when we were kids that my cousins taped on their tape recorder called “The Pretty Little Dolly.” We used to regularly listen to this tape every Christmas, it has become a cult classic within my family. If I have to pick a traditional Christmas song, it would have to be “Silent Night”.
20. Candy Canes, yes or no? Nope. They’re gritty, sticky, and generally annoying to me in most ways. Unless they’re hanging as decorations, that’s OK.
