I led warmups tonight, making sure to dole out a liberal dollop of the six-pack abs workout that we’ve been doing. Sensei Brewer ran us through a really great first class that consisted of basic techniques. I tried to focus on punching from my core which slowed down my techniques a little, but gave them a little better range of motion and strength.
I needed that strength and range of motion, because I ended up with Dobbleaire-san for a set of drills that worked on body shifting. I was making it a point to cut sharply at the end of his attack, making as close to a 90 degree angle as I could. He liked that notion and tried it himself, saying how great it felt… must’ve looked good, because we were asked to demo it for the rest of the class.
The second class was kata-centric for the first part, focusing on visualizing the attackers and getting into a self-defense mindset as the kata progresses. Sensei had us mentally break down the techniques into threats, akin to
