I spent most of today window shopping for a new handgun. After several visits to several sporting goods stores, I wanted to check with Gander Mountain in Peoria to see what they had.
I went, saw that they had not much additional selection than some of the other sporting goods shops that I had visited, and made my way back out to the parking lot to head home.
I get in my car, put the key in the ignition and turn it. My radio and dash comes to life and normal, however when I go to actually start the car nothing happened. Weird. I turned the car off and then back on again. This time, the electrical system went “click-click-click-click” and my dash went all screwy, including several of my service lights, which showed up quite brightly and then started to dim as the car went into spasms.
I noticed that my steering column was somewhat locked, which has happened to me in the past when the alarm system thinks that it has triggered. I followed the instructions for taking care of that to no avail. I was able to get the steering column to unlock, but that did not solve the problem of the car not turning over.
After much head scratching, I checked the fuse box. Nothing out of the ordinary there. The battery was obviously getting juice because my dash, radio, and alarm systems all worked just fine until I actually attempted to turn the car on.
I tried every other option in the service manual on getting the car to start, and (unsurprisingly) none of these seemed to help matters.
Eventually, I gave up and called Joe’s Towing. They delivered my car to the Saturn dealership, who should contact me in the morning to determine what is wrong with the thing. Luckily, my lovely wife was getting chiropracted around the corner from Gander Mountain so she came over to give me a ride home.
This is one of the moments that I am extremely pleased to have paid down my debt so far. Two years ago, this situation would’ve almost guaranteed further credit card debt and much financial uncertainty. Now, it means I may just have to deny myself a new firearm for another month if the repairs are costly. If they are not as costly it simply means that we don’t pay quite as much down on the credit card this month, but forward progress *should* still be possible.
Let’s hear it for financial responsibility!! 🙂
