Tonight was a lesson in hip action courtesy of Sensei Quinn. I was having some trouble keeping my rear foot down and utilizing my hip action correctly, but by the end it was starting to feel more natural. It was a constant burn all class long, and I was definitely sweaty by the end.
I demonstrated some of our new situps for the rest of the Breakfast Club, and a disagreement was quickly settled by reviewing the videotape: the guy doing the drill was sitting up fully to his thighs and then standing up, not attempting to drag his body straight up from the ground. Even from the very first one, he visibly crunches and pulls his upper body up before he stands. Odie was trying to convince us that the consensus was that the drill intended one to rise like Dracula out of the crypt by just thigh strength alone. Crazy!
The second class was a fast burn workout focusing on some of the same concepts from the first class only up and down the floor in sparring stance. We ended up the night with some sparring drills to apply those combinations, and let me just say: Sensei Quinn is amazing. That’s just all there is to it. I was able to catch him with a few of my kicks, but when he caught me it was distinctly more… well… decisive.
More Thursday!
