For the first class, I got to teach the new white belt while Sensei Brewer took the first class. It was another small one… a handful of yellow belts, a white belt,
I knocked out two of my three sets of pushups in between classes, and then a few of the remaining yellow belts wanted to try the handles so I let them. Then Lawrence-san threw in for a few of his own, and then we launched into a reprieve of last class. This time we added in side thrust kick as a counter, back kick (!!), and roundhouse kick. We finished off the workout with some light slow sparring.
These drills have made me realize that I really, REALLY stink at going to the angles. I either don’t cut far enough, cut too far and end up too close, or end up circle strafing with my partner who is also doing so, creating some sort of unholy stalemated whirlwind of nothingness.
That, and my stance while sparring is TERRIBLE. I always end up back on my heels, sometimes with one leg up which leaves me vulnerable to… well… death. Sensei got after me for ending up too close and then defaulting to my front leg side kick. I really have to learn how to stop that, which probably means more free sparring.
