Tonight’s workout was a little easier than the last few had been. Class was taught by Sensei Gordon, and it was interesting… we did some uru-tsuki (close punch), tate-tsuki (vertical punch), and then regular choko-tsuki (straight punch) with partners as targets, and then we did a very low level side snap kick right off the ground at about shin level at our partner. He had a name for it but I don’t remember what it was… different than anything I have done before.
Then we did our monthly warm-up, this month is sliding forward in front stance with a jab and at the same time rear leg front kick. As you land, reverse punch, then slide backwards in front stance with a jab reverse punch. We did another sliding combination, moving forward with a pressing block across the face and a reverse punch slightly underneath. Then we stepped back to a 45 degree angle and performed a backfist strike, then a front leg roundhouse kick and then a reverse punch.
We then did variations of shifting to the angles with our partner for about fifteen minutes, and rounded out the class with Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, and Heian Yondan.
After class, Sensei Yaguchi gave me my membership card for the ISKF. He asked my rank to write in, and I told him “Nidan, if that stays the same in this organization.” He quipped back “eh, not my school but good enough for me!” and signed my card. So now I’m official in the third karate organization I’ve ever belonged to, fun stuff!
