I was recently approached by a buddy at the office, Paul B. He’s practiced several martial arts over the years, but primarily in a derivative of tang su do. I was talking up the positive experience I’ve had at the Arvada dojo and he approached me about doing some cross training with him because he wanted to get back into his martial arts seriously, and had been growing dissatisfied with his school.
So tonight, I went over to his house and we spent 2.5 hours comparing our styles and doing basics and kata. He does the Pyong An katas, which appear to be Korean versions of Shotokan’s Heian katas. In fact, they were so laughably close that I was able to help him through a few spots when he got turned around. I showed him the Tekki katas and a few black belt katas, and he showed me a few of his black belt katas. His style was one where they had “designed” katas in addition to the more traditional fare, and he showed me one of those as well.
It was a BLAST, and we’re going to do this more often. He’s also going to join in at the Arvada dojo and get some Shotokan into his life. Happy yet, shotobushi?

If you ever feel like being in a martial arts movie, let me know. I’m directing a martial arts comedy film based on a script I wrote, and we could use more fighters.
This from a guy has always given me copious amount of shit for training with people from other styles, and won’t read a martial arts book unless first suggested and approved by Sensei.
I invite you to munch my butt, John.
