I do hope you’ll forgive the somewhat random nature of this comment, but I do believe you encountered an associate of mine at the Botanic Gardens. There was a whole group of us dressed up in full steampunk regalia.
Without a picture with which to make positive identification I can’t be certain, but almost all of us at the Botanic Gardens the other day were at NDK (the major anime convention in Denver) as well.
I am happy to provide this picture, I hope he’s a member of this group! As you can see, I took some liberties with the original photo, which can be found here.
This is why I love the Internet… there’s nothing like making a passing comment about an interesting person you met only to come across a friend of theirs online.
Anyway, I was very impressed with the quality of this gentleman’s costume. Attention to detail must be a prerequisite to being a steampunk enthusiast.

Haha, indeed, the internet truly is a wonderful place. Also, that is him, without a doubt.
Steampunk may well be the most labor intensive hobby I’ve ever picked up, particularly if one wishes to be put in the category of “good steampunk,” as opposed to “I-threw-this-together-in-10-minutes steampunk,” (though the latter category is, admittedly, not always bad).
If you’ve got any links that got you started, I’d love to read them. Periodically, I will see some cool steampunk stuff show up on BoingBoing.net and it is nearly always interesting to me.
Thanks for writing, and give my regards to your friend for letting me take the photo!
