Tonight I made it back to the dojo (thank God!) where we worked on kata and sparring drills. We did all of the Heian kata, followed by a sparring drill where we made a circle and took turns doing blocking and counterattacks against an opponent randomly called out by Sensei Tarrant.
After this, he spoke to us a bit about the intention of kata and how he dislikes the lack of intention and the over-exaggerated tournament kata that he sees nowadays. We followed this up with our individual kata (Sochin for me). After class wrapped up, we stayed around swapping stories about tournaments, thoughts on kata, and we did a few moves of Sochin to talk about regional differences.
It was a really good night! It’s dinnertime now, so I’ll sign off.
