Tonight’s workout was interesting. It consisted of no fewer than three “quick burn” periods of the workout, punctuated by partner drills and some sparring in the second class.
The “quick burn” periods are the portions of workout where we are made to do many sets of techniques forward and backward up and down the floor to build muscle memory and work on good technique. Sometimes there is a theme, other times its just to build stamina. That usually gets my heart rate up and makes me feel like death, which is good because it almost always leads to strengthening or partner drills. The bright spot for me was the front kicks, mine felt like they were really whistling.
Tonight, as previously mentioned, we got to do some drills to test our form. Our partners got to kick us in the stomach, test our body locking my moving our arms (and the associated chest/abs/legs) around, stand on our back knee, and otherwise give us significant torture.
McCabe-san and I decided to do some light sparring in between classes and I’m glad we did. We had a good time, we both got to try out new strategies, and it seems that we are still sharing the same brainpan. I’m starting to figure out how to throw my techniques as he’s finishing his, which is helping.
We did some sparring combinations (which I felt utterly useless at, despite the sparring match that I had just finished with), followed by some 3-5 time attack. I got across from
The other noteable match up of the night was me and Garls-san. We took a much more relaxed and calm approach to our 3-5 time attack, but we both got to work on control and timing which was very beneficial. We each had moments of surprise when the other would hit with an unexpected technique, and a few of those “whiff moments” where you never saw it coming.
I was BEAT by the end of this one. I don’t know what it was, but I felt like I should’ve stayed on the couch instead of working out. But I’m glad I went, I think I’m starting to see where it is I need to go.
