Today was Western’s Annual BIG (Business, Industry, and Graduate) Career Fair. There were four places listed that were accepting Computer Science applicants. First off was DOT Foods. They’re a food redistributor with a big information infrastructure. They have a bad reputation for doing a lot of interviewing and very little to no hiring. I talked to the guy for a few minutes and dropped my resume off. I don’t expect much there.
Kraft Foods and Archer Daniels were only taking applications for internships or coops. Since I happen to know a guy that works for Kraft, I was able to get a resume dropped off there even though I don’t want an internship. Not so lucky at ADM.
Finally, there was Software Architects, a company that I’ve not seen down here before. The guy I talked to was really cool, we talked for nearly ten minutes. He noticed my id Software reference on my resume’, and we discussed gaming for quite awhile. They’re a custom application company that works in Java and Oracle, and are based out of Westchester, IL. They seem like the best bet for a callback, the guy told me he was going to do the first round of interviews via phone probably, since it’s a haul from Westchester to here apparently. He also asked me about relocating up there. I noticed him writing intently on the back of my resume after I left him, which I hope is a good sign.
I was able to weasel my resumes into a few other places like John Deere and State Farm, even though they either weren’t looking for CS people or weren’t hiring full time. Yesterday I sent a resume to Simutronics out of St. Charles, MO. They make the MUD I play, and they’re hiring software people. And they’re in a Karate Town, so I hope they get back to me too. Now only time will tell.
