Apparently, Mel Gibson is attempting some bid for sainthood with his new film. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, start of the Catholic season of Lent. It was also the opening of Mel’s “The Passion of The Christ” that you’ve heard about on the news.
Ash Wednesday is usually one of the “Bad Catholic” holidays that even the worst Catholics still end up coming to Mass. I’m guessing a fair amount of people were scared by Saint Mel’s new movie because there was about double the turnout of the most packed Ash Wednesday Mass that I can remember.
I have mixed feelings about this, but I guess that’s a good thing. I have yet to see the film and I’m not entirely sure I’m going to. I know the plot, and I fully accept the fact that cruxifiction was terrible and bloody and all that. I just don’t think I need to see it myself.
For those of you that don’t know the plot: He dies, it’s bloody (both because it’s torture, and because Mel Gibson is attached). Don’t worry, He gets better. Eventually He’s coming back. I dunno if Mel’s going to direct.

Apparently some woman suffered a heart attack during the crucifiction scene and died due to the graphic content of him being nailed to the cross. I don’t plan on seeing the movie, but I think that people who plan on seeing it actually need to be prepared for gorey scenes. Besides, it’s completely in aramaic with english subtitles, I don’t think I have enough of an attention span for that.
I know someone who just saw the film. They definately agreed with the “prepare to be squimish” theme, as I guess they certainly give you a little more than you can handle.
If given the chance I’d like to go see it. To hear arabic and latin alone sounds kewl.
I think the underlying current here is that if you think watching it was a little unbearable, imagine experiencing it yourself. Something to ponder.
On a side note, my friend, who is far more bible orientated than myself, indicated there were a few scenes which were not found in the bible. I’d be very interested to see if Mel did some unorothodox methods of history fact finding to create a few extra scenes, or what not.
Hmm. Well just a few thoughts. Don’t mind me.
