Last night was as close to hell as I’ve been in awhile. However, it was the good kind of hell that made you happy that you made it through by the end. I don’t know what horrible beast made the humidity that descended on the YWCA last night, but I know it was some sort of friend to Sensei Hartman.
I’ve not done any intensive outdoor training since I left for college, since Sensei Kuras is adamantly opposed to allowing such things because “you might find broken glass with your feet.” That’s not to say I didn’t get a little bit in during my free time when he was out of town or not around, but that’s beside the point. The point is that I am out of shape for such endeavors.
I would’ve probably been able to do it a little bit better had the humidity not been choking. I could feel the energy sapping out of my body while I was out there, and then the drills we were doing weren’t helping matters too much. It equated to a great leg workout either way. Tasha was suffering most of last night, but I’ll leave that for HER to complain about. The tops of my thighs and my butt are the affected areas this morning. Stairs and inclines are nigh-on impossible.
I also found out that generating power really isn’t impossible if your legs are somewhat incapacitated. It just takes massive hip power and knowing your limitation for bending. We did kata the second class, and Empi really hasn’t ever felt better for me. The dropping punch in crossfeet stance took on new form, as did the downward strike to the rear. It had never felt like a strike until last night, mostly because of incorrect interpretation of where the hips should be.
Regardless, I’m feeling it today. Tomorrow night I have a work function that Tasha and I have to be at, so I will get to recover by one workout before the gasshuku on Saturday.
