2005 Workout #140: More Kumite, good for what ails ya!

From the onset it was obvious that tonight’s workout was going to be sparring intensive. When Dad and I came in (15 minutes late), had The Look ™ which indicates a strong desire to lay waste to the general populace.

Sensei Brewer was teaching tonight, and we did a nice solid basic class that consisted of basics and several kata. We also got to do some sparring combinations. I felt like my footwork and hand timing was surprisingly on tonight despite my general inability to actually put this feeling to work in the past week. Something must be sticking, however its not yet manifesting itself when I actually try to use it with a partner.

The second class was very sparring heavy. We did 3 time sparring which turned into 3-5 time sparring. For much of it, I got across from who was helping me to keep my body down and from running away. The good thing (I guess its good…) is that I realize that I’m doing these things but still have to make concerted efforts to NOT repeat my mistakes. When I attempt to correct myself it seems to work 1 in every 5 tries. My only other observation: damn is fast. Good lord…. one of these days I will have that kind’ve speed and power. Maybe in another 15 years.

wanted to spar for a bit after class, but I know how the Mapleton crowd gets and they don’t like to be kept waiting after 8 pm so I elected to take a raincheck until tomorrow. I really am loving the direction that we’ve taken toward sparring in the last few workouts. I like having large amounts of opportunity to examine and fix what is wrong with me, either by my own observations or by the force of others keying on my weaknesses.
