I just got notice from the carrier pigeons at NewEgg.com that my Eee PC 1000 has shipped!
They have been taking pre-orders from Amazon.com for a very long time, however somehow NewEgg has been able to scoop pretty much every vendor online for both of the newer Eee models.
Now, a few words on my motivation. Several of my nerd friends have either eschewed the Eee PC as being a toy machine, or embraced it for the same reasons I have: portability and battery life. Now that I’m traveling for the company more often, having a laptop that I don’t have to plug in for 7.5 hours and I can stow in my carry-on bag is a MAJOR plus.
Add to that the coolness of having a solid state hard drive (no moving parts to break) and the fact that it runs Linux pretty well cements it into the awesome category for me. It’s not a gaming system. It is intended as a ultra portable internet device and productivity system. It has enough power to run Eclipse, a web server, a web browser, Skype, and various other things that are desirable to me. When I look at it, I see the ability to be able to blog ANYWHERE I want. Plus its got 802.11n so I can take advantage the faster network when/where it is available.
People hack these things regularly to add touch screens to the LCD panel, additional cards and capabilities, and a few have even gotten some 3D first person shooter games to run somewhat decently on them.
This thing is a nerd’s playground, so lets just say I’m REALLY pumped. Expect to see some unboxing pictures soon!
